Previous: Ministry Involvement
Over the years when Rev. Bumpas was pastoring FPC, several families have moved away. A significant group departed to help start Grace Community Church in Troy, and close to 20% of the aging congregation have moved to their permanent home in glory.
Concerned over declining membership, our pastor and other leaders learned about the Embers to a Flame conference and Fanning the Flame (FTF) ministry. These are based out of Briarwood Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, AL and are focused on local church revitalization and renewal.
After our pastor and a couple of elders attended an Embers conference, our elders decided in 2015 to bring the Fanning the Flame ministry to First Presbyterian. FTF is a coaching ministry that spends 12-18 months implementing the practices of church health and vitality.
Jesus wrote the church in Ephesus in Rev. 2:5, “Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will remove your lampstand from its place.”
With the help of FTF, we have three main goals based on that passage that we pray God will use to revitalize FPC:
Remember. Repent. Recover the first things.
We need to Remember the past. This history is part of that effort.
We need to Repent of our sins, both individually and corporately.
We need to Recover the first things, the basics of church health.
By God’s grace, the next installment in this history will be in January 2017, and will be a glory story of the first fruits of revitalization at FPC.
